In October, performance Boris Godunov was included in the programs of two international theatre festivals in Russia. October 10th and 11th it was part of the Stanislavsky Theatre Season Festival (Moscow) and October 13th, 14th it appeared on stage of the Baltic House Theatre Festival (St. Petersburg). In both cities Nekrošius’s piece was well received by theatre critics. It was praised for the director’s work, moderate set design, and acting skills, both of actors playing the main parts and each member of the “folk” scenes.

“Boris Godunov” is a performance based on a historical play, which speaks of the realities of the period in the Russian history, which is distinguished by an intense fight for power. Boris Godunov (played by Salvijus Trepulis) is a boyar of Tatar decendance who lives in the 16th century and becomes a tsar. He kills the legitimate heir to the Russian throne, a child of Tsar Ivan The Terrible, Dmitriy. Complying with the demand of the Russian people, Boris ascends the throne. Some years later, a pretender to the throne appears, a monk who declares himself Dmitriy (played by Marius Repšys). He claims his right to the throne and marches to Moscow with a crowd of supporters…

“It’s a performance about power, human relations and relations of people with the state. People in power also come from common people. They are the same like the rest of us. Therefore, it’s very interesting to see a human being undergo transformation as the cult of the leader comes into existence. Working with this play has been great but very difficult. There are so many scenes, and so many decisions to take. I also like this play because it mentions Lithuania a lot. It’s comforting to see that we were important in this drama,” says director Eimuntas Nekrošius.

Boris Godunov  will be played on the Big Stage of Lithuanian National Drama Theatre November 26th, December 19th, January 15th and 29th. On November 26th at 18.30 the performance will be shown with English subtitles.
