Nikolajus Gogolis (1809-1852) – vienas pačių mįslingiausių, genialiausių ir paslaptingiausių rusų rašytojų. Jis išgyveno kankinančią dvasinio gyvenimo dramą, ligi šiol neaiškiomis aplinkybėmis sudegino antrąją „Mirusių sielų“ dalį. Rašytojas ieškojo žemėje Dievo karalystės, bet tie ieškojimai įgavo mistiškas, iškreiptas formas. N. Gogolis vaizdavo ne realius žmones, o juos įkūnijančias jėgas bei charakterius. Jo kūriniuose sunku atskirti tiesą nuo išmonės.
Išskirtinis N. Gogolio kūrybos bruožas – humoras, kuriame atsiveria kūrinių ir personažų gelmės. Pjesė „Vedybos“ (1841 m.) – paslaptinga rusų klasika. Galėtume ją priskirti realistinei – buitinei komedijai, bet N. Gogolis mums užrašė kūrinio perskaitymo versiją, tai – „visiškai neįtikėtinas dviejų veiksmų įvykis“.
„Vedybos“ – metaforinis kūrinys. Kiekviena spektaklio detalė, kostiumai, herojų charakteriai sustiprina N. Gogolio kūrybos mistiką. Pjesės herojus – Podkoliosinas paniškai bijo vesti. Jam peršama brandaus amžiaus moteriškė Agafija, kuri vis dar svajoja apie vestuves...
Žiūrovui palikta teisė įminti personažų išraiškingas pavardes – Podkoliosinas, Kočkariovas, Jajičnica, Starikovas.
Pjesės veiksmas vyksta tik vieną dieną...
