Oskaras KORŠUNOVAS

Koršunovas was born on March 6, 1969, in Vilnius. In 1993 he finished theatre directing studies at the Lithuanian Academy of Music (course of Jonas Vaitkus). While still a student, in 1990-1998, Koršunovas directed plays at Lithuanian State Academic Drama Theatre, where his unique theatrical language was immediately noticed. In 1997-2001 taught at the Lithuanian Academy of Music, and led workshops abroad. In 1999 together with like-minded colleagues established the public body “Oskaras Koršunovas Theatre”, in 2004 the theatre was given the name of the Vilnius City Theatre. He has created his own personal style and established the concept of his theatre. He focuses on present-day reality, chaos and paradox, absurdity and fragmentation. The director actively participates in international festivals and guest directs at various theatres of the world.

In 2002 Koršunovas was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize of Culture and Art, in 2003 –Cross of Officer of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, in 2006 – the Europe Theatre Prize for New Realities. The director has received prizes at international theatre festivals in Edinburgh, Torun, Salzburg, Normandy, Sarajevo, and Belgrade, as well as the St. Christopher Prize in 1995 and 2000. In 2003 he was awarded the Golden Cross of the Stage for “The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” and “The Cold Child”, in 2010 for his direction of “The Lower Depths” and in 2011 – for “Expulsion” and “Miranda.” In 2006 he received the Cross of Merit from the President of Poland, in 2009 was given the honourable title of the Chevalier of the French order of Literature and Arts, and the next year he was awarded with the main prize of the Annual Meyerhold Assembly.
