LNDT production received 12 nominations for the Golden Cross of the Stage

On March 8, the Commission of The Golden Cross of the Stage announced the names of theater artists who created the most memorable works in 2016 and have been nominated for the most important award of the Lithuanian theater. As many as five productions of the Lithuanian National Drama Theater are competing in different categories. Among them, “The Tidings Brought to Mary”, The Oedipus Myth”, “Old Man Bones on the Iron Mountain”, “Eglė the Queen of Serpents” and “Animal (Coo Coo)”.

Of all the productions of the Lithuanian National Drama Theater, the play “The Tidings Brought to Mary”, which premiered on 29 October, 20, received the most nominations. The religious-themed play based on a work by a French poet, dramatist and diplomat Paul Claudel (1868-1955) who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize six times, is a cooperation with the Lithuanian Russian Drama Theater. Actresses Dalia Michelevičiūtė and Nelė Savičenko who played Mother have been nominated in the category of the Best Drama Actress (secondary role), Vytautas Anužis, who plays Anne Vercors – in the Best Actor’s category (secondary role). Composer Algirdas Martinaitis, lighting designer Vilius Vilutis and video artist Rimas Sakalauskas are also among nominees in their respective categories.

“The Oedipus Myth” based on works by the great ancient tragedians Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides, directed by Gintaras Varnas, has been nominated in six categories. It premiered at the Lithuanian National Drama Theater on April 29, 2016. Among other nominees are: the set designer Gintaras Makarevičius, composer Onutė Narbutaitė, lighting designer Vilius Vilutis, author of the video projections Rimas Sakalauskas and actors – Vytautas Anužis for his role as Tiresias (drama actor (secondary role)) and Arūnas Sakalauskas for playing King Creaon (drama actor (the main role)). Arūnas Sakalauskas has also been nominated for playing Janis in “Animal (Coo Coo)”, dir. Rolandas Atkočiūnas.

A cooperation with OKT / Vilnius City Theater, an interactive performance “Egle the Queen of Serpents” about refugees and the value-crisis in Europe, directed by Oskaras Koršunovas, presented in Vilnius Red Cross Hospital in the fall of 2016, is nominated in the category Theater+. Composer Gintaras Sodeika, who wrote the music for the play, has been nominated for best original score. The score of the children’s play “Old Man Bones on the Iron Mountain”, dir. Jonas Tertelis, earned G. Sodeika another nomination for the Golden Cross. The play, which was inspired by the Lithuanian folk tale written down by Jonas Basanavičius as well as works of painter and book illustrator Birutė Žilytė, contends in the Best Theater For Children And Young People category.

Lithuanian National Drama Theater productions of 2016 have been nominated for the Golden Cross of the Stage in 12 categories.
