Two major events in March and May

Lithuanian National Drama Theatre this year is celebrating 75th work anniversary and in order to commemorate this jubilee presents two big premieres, created by two contemporary theatre legends. Lithuanian director Eimuntas Nekrošius and Polish director Krystian Lupa are going to meet under the roof of the same theatre for the first time.

On 27, 28 March will premiere the new creation of Krystian Lupa, based on the last work of Thomas Bernhard Heroes’ Square (Heldenplatz). Written in 1988, the play was inspired by two dates – the 100th anniversary of Burgtheater and the 50th anniversary of the welcoming of Hitler in the Heldenplatz in Vienna. Bernhard through one family picture furiously opens up the dark side of Austria‘s state of mind and shows how the past determines catastrophe in present. What does Heroes’ Square mean for contemporary European consciousness? Krystian Lupa with a team of selected Lithuanian actors seek answers to this question.

Eimuntas Nekrošius takes up the challenge to stage famous Russian historical drama Boris Godunov by Alexander Pushkin. According to Nekrošius, interpret this play today requires a civic stance from the artist. This mean the artistical response to our time. Nekrošius never chased political actualities and still doesn‘t so far. Nevertheless Boris Godunov suppose to be a personal political gesture. Nekrosius tests the classical collision between Russian monarchy as well as political elite and the folk by putting it on the blade of humanity with evoked visionary of his Shakespearian tragedies. Boris Godunov will premiere on 22, 23 May.
